VOLUNTEERING AND WORK EXPERIENCE

For students, there is going to be more Volunteering than work experience while for graduates the converse will be the case. In most tertiary institutions volunteering work abounds. Volunteering work takes on different form like visiting an orphanage to help with sorting of items or assisting in teaching orphans English or mathematics. It can also come in the form of clean up initiatives where a group of like-minded individuals come together to clean an environment. There are also a lot of Medical outreaches where you don’t have to be a medical personnel to participate. I have been to a few myself where I met people from different works of life coming to help. If you are in the IT field it may take the form of running a free computer diagnostic clinic.

Despite the abundance it is obvious that volunteerism is under appreciated and utilized but it is none the less key. The experience is invaluable and a number of global programmes such as the Young African Leaders initiative use civic leadership/ volunteerism as a criterion.Work experience means exactly what it says and there is little to add to it except that a lot of people do not realise that Externship, if you are in the medical line and IT if you are not in the medical line counts as work experience. My school also has an under-utilised work and study programme which I think it is great with the added advantage of being paid some money. This information is however alien to some and it will do you a lot of good to inquire from the Student Affairs division or relevant authorities in your institution for the relevant information.

I however need to say I enjoy volunteering in an health outreach because it is a huge confidence booster and allows you to understand that a lot of people are not as comfortable as you and will really benefit from your assistance. I came across the interview of an American Medical student that won a prestigious scholar. When asked what the difference was she said it was her volunteerism. She visited a free clinic every Thursday for several years to conduct a diabetic foot examination.Note that most people are also aware of a term called Resume/C.V padding so don’t just start doing everything in your final year or so. It is always obvious and it will be assumed that you are doing that solely to get admitted into your interested programme.
